Danai, a young Greek woman (Camilla Rutherford), is plucked from obscurity and brought to the Bios Institute - a research facility located on the idyllic Greek island Spetses, by Hector (Alki David), a professional dive master. There, she is trained to be the undisputed men and women's freediving champion of the world. While Danai trains, she falls in love with Hector. He warns Danai that Nicolas, (Adam Baldwin) the doctor running the program, is unscrupulous and will use Danai to his own advantage, but misguided, she trusts Nicolas. Danai's main rival is American champion Freediver Maggie Stone (Dominique Swain) - the 'best in the world'. With Nicolas encouraging her, Danai becomes determined to not only beat Maggie, but to take on the men's freediving records as well, no matter what the cost. On the surface, a rivalry appears between Maggie's agent Ziad (Judd Nelson) and the ruthless Nicolas, but in fact the deadly truth is much more ominous. Under the selfish care of her obsessive doctor Danai is forced to go to deeper and deeper underwater depths with the promise that one more record will have every sponsor on earth wanting a piece of her. Nicolas continues to push her even though he knows she has a heart disease which could be fatal. Hector, unable to watch Danai destroy herself, reluctantly leaves the institute, and Danai must face her challenger alone. Shot entirely on location in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, THE FREEDIVER is a tale of one woman's inner strength and desire to be the best against all the odds.
